Project brief.

The vision for the new Centre for Sporting Excellence is to create Hong Kong’s most inclusive facility for sports training and competitions.

The interior of the building will feature a world-class, competition-size, multi-purpose gymnasium and aquatics centre. Externally, a full-sized rugby pitch will be located beside the building and a hockey pitch on the roof. Supporting facilities include cafes, co-working spaces, creches, hydrotherapy and therapy facilities, and sports science laboratories.

Key to the brief is creating a venue that enriches the whole Kowloon area of Hong Kong; a place for the whole community to prepare, train and compete in the very best facilities.

Project scope.

Motionspot was appointed as the accessible design advisor for the concept feasibility study of the sports centre by the English Schools Foundation and Ryder Architecture.

Our team was engaged at the earliest stage of this ongoing project to ensure world-leading inclusive design principles were embedded. This included all aspects of the design relating to the exterior site and interior circulation, materiality, and product specification, to ensure the space catered for the widest range of sensory, physical, and cognitive abilities. Our approach considered all athletes, visitors, and staff. Particular attention was paid to the spectator experience in an environment that can present long waiting times, physical obstacles, and elevated sensory stimulation.

This project presented numerous additional complex factors to navigate, including International Olympic regulations, the challenging environmental conditions of Hong Kong, and the highest environmental building standards.
